21st-Century Skills

Partnership for 21st-Century Skills Website
P21 is a national organization that advocates for 21st century readiness for every student.  This organization believes that critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity and innovation are key skills for the 21st-century.  I agree with the beliefs and ideas of this website and feel that they are similar to what Dr. Thornburg and Dr. Dede believe.  I especially liked the layout of the framework for 21st-century skills.  The framework consists of core subjects, 21st-century content, learning and thinking skills, information and communications technology, life skills, and 21st-century assessments.   There are various online tools, resources, and links for 21st-century skills.  I was disappointed to see that Georgia was not listed under their state initiatives.  Overall, it’s a great informative website for 21st-century skills.

  1. I am also disappointed that my state, Washington, is not one of the leadership states. I think this website talked a lot about the theory of the 4 Cs and framework of 21st century learning, but very little on how to implement this in the classroom.I hoped for more hands on tools to help me implement the framework more in my classroom. As a 1st grade teacher, do you think that it will be more challenging to work on the 4 Cs than upper grades? I know that these are more challenging skills for my students, but I think that if started from the beginning, students will really learn critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity more. Also, I think it is important to realize that students will likely gravitate to one or more of these skills. I visualize my past students and I see some that were very creative, but may have had a difficult time communicating and collaborating with other. By teaching all of these skills, all students will learn skills, not just the ones they are more naturally drawn to. If we really focus on these skills in all grades, I really believe all students will be more prepared for the future.

  2. I also agree with the beliefs and ideas of the website. We actually have incorporated the 21st century skills website into our pacing guide. I also struggle with incorporating the 21st century skills into my classroom. I would like someone to come and train my colleagues and I on exactly how to incorporate 21st century skills into the classroom. I have used a couple of 21st century skills into my classroom but would like to use more.

  3. @Jill

    I do think that I could incorporate the 4 C's into my 1st grade classroom and agree that if all teachers at all grade levels touched on 21st-century skills at some point in their lessons, that it would benefit all students for their future.

    @Demetria

    I love that your school has 21st-century skills incorporated into your pacing guide. What grades is this for?
